For types of hardcore fandom categories !!!!!!!!

You years I’ve been doing comic book art and I’ve been around the internet forum and website and seen hundreds of different group and different types of geeks. After years of watching and studying I’ve noticed that most of these groups, well the hardcore entertainment type can be put into one of the 4 categories. Also when I mean hardcore I’m talking about people who will go out of there way to dress up in order to show how hardcore they are. Why do they do this is a mystery even to me. As a tech geek I’ve never been to a convention that did not have computer hardware as the main media for the show and yes I’m a mostly windows geek and yes I do think most Mac users are computer illiterate. As an online gamer a one button mouse will just not do.

First I would like to start off with the “SCIENCE FICTION” fans. I’ve notice a majority of the hardcore science fiction dress up as ether as Star wars type characters or as Star Trak type characters. The odd part about these hardcore science fiction fans is that they fight among them self’s more then they fight against other hardcore fans of different categories. Science Fiction geeks been known to be the hardcore of the hardcore and some even go out the way to memorize movies word by word and even got there own alien Klingon language. When it comes to customs they seem to be the first and have the most high-tech customs of any hardcore geekdom. The only true down side is there is a lack of females or female’s lack of interest in science fiction all together.

Next I would like to move over to the Fantasy or what I like to call it “NATURES FANTASY” because most of the hardcore fans seem to like there media of what fantasy should take place in a non-industrial environment, an environment with less cold technology and more warm nature and magic. The fantasy group seems to invalid people from the Lord of the rings, dungeon and dragons, Harry potter, and the new addition of MMORPG fantasy groups. The hardcore groups dress up as dwarves, elves, orcs, witches, and wizards. They seem to have far more females then the science fiction group but they also seem to be of one race the majority of the time. How many times did you see a black elf? A few extra things I’ve notice about fantasy geek. You may notice allot of them use the unicorn as a way to promote the fandom of fantasy.

Now on to the comic book or what I like to call it the “AMERICAN COMIC’S”. The comic book group seems to invalid the superhero’s comic, detective comic, horror comic, cartoon comic, and both science fiction and fantasy comics. The majority of hardcore geeks dress up as superhero’s form the 2 major comic book companies, Marvel and DC. They seem to have more female then the science fiction groups but less then the fantasy groups. The hardcore comic book geek also seems to be the most racially diverse then the science fiction, fantasy, and anime groups. Hardcore comic book geeks are the most critical of any geekdom, if you deliver you will have a group of followers who will follow you to the ends of the earth, but if you fall short they will hound you into hiding for a life time, No lie! In the 1990’s a few major comic book movies been hitting the box office. Since 2000 a new wave of comic book movies been hitting the box office and not all of them are made by DC or Marvel. To top it off you may have seen a few movie’s with out knowing they started out as a comic. Comic book geeks seem to have allot on there plate for quiet sometime.

Last but not least Anime or what I like to call it “ANIME/MANGA”. Anime/Manga seems to have the foot hold when it comes to big robot Mech’s and Marshal arts. The Anime/Manga group also seems to have its own brand of science fiction and fantasy. Allot of anime like to have both rather then on or the other. The result you get is that one wood village can live a few miles from a huge concrete city and that city can live a few miles from an even bigger steel industrial capital city. This seem to reflect on japans environment where you have one small village nearly unchanged for hundreds of year and all you have to do in order to see a bigger city is hop on to the train and go to a city the size of New York. The hardcore geeks dress up as Robots, characters with huge hairdos, Final fantasy, and some type of mini pocket creatures. Anime/ Manga seem fairly racially diverse and hold the largest amount of females for any group of geeks. The down side is they seem to have to fight against the other different types of geeks. Rather it’s the “SCIENCE FICTION” or the “NATURES FANTASY” or the “AMERICAN COMIC’S” Anime always seem to be treated as the odd ball. Could it be a clash of different cultures or just plane cultures shock? Only time will tell.

I personal think it has to do mainly with sexuality. That’s why I’m one of the few who thinks most of the problems can be avoided with allowing the American media to edit off shore media before it hits TV. Don’t wish to keep on blabbing on and on so I’ll see yeah next time.
